🛫 Maximizing Aeroplan Points: Getting the Most Value
Last time, we talked about using your Aeroplan points for flights on Air Canada and its partners. Now, let's dive into some examples that really make those points count.
First off, Aeroplan's redemption chart sets the stage for point spending. But not all flights offer the same bang for your buck. Some redemptions are real gems, while others might leave you wanting. Here are a couple of options that stand out:
1. West Coast to Japan: A Sweet Surprise 🌸
Route: Despite the longer flight from Vancouver to Japan, it's surprisingly more cost-effective than flying to Europe from Toronto.
Distance Band: We're focusing on the 0 – 5,000 miles distance band between North America and Pacific Zones.
Points Required: Economy (35,000), Premium Economy (45,000), Business Class (55,000)
Booking Tips: Seats on this route are hot, thanks to the incredible value.
Airlines: You can hop on ANA (All Nippon Airways) or Air Canada from Vancouver to Tokyo.
Alternative Route: Check out Air Canada's summer route from Vancouver to Osaka.
Connection Bonus: If you're starting west of Calgary, you can add a connection to Vancouver without extra cost, staying under the 5,000-mile limit.
Availability: For Vancouver to Osaka, there are promising business class seats in Summer 2024. Vancouver to Tokyo on ANA usually has good economy availability year-round.
2. East Coast to Southeast Asia via Connection: A Great Deal or Not? 🍜
Value: The 7,501 – 11,000 miles distance band between North America and Pacific Zones offers a unique value proposition. You can fly 120% further than the 0 - 5,000 distance band for only 59% more points.
Route: Imagine a journey from Toronto → Istanbul → Singapore in business class.
Distance: 10,484 miles
Cost: 87,500 miles
Airlines: Ideal if you can snag seats on Aeroplan partners like Turkish Airlines or Singapore Airlines for a luxurious experience.
Challenges: Availability on preferred partners can be sporadic. Aeroplan might suggest routes like Toronto – Delhi – Singapore, primarily on Air India. Note that Air India's business class isn't on par with Turkish or Singapore Airlines. Value vs. experience—weigh your options.
3. East Coast to Europe: More Than Just Air Canada 🏰
Value: Flying from the East Coast to Europe, while slightly pricier than the Vancouver to Japan route, can still offer excellent value. The real advantage is the variety of partner airlines servicing this route.
Points Required: Economy (35,000), Business Class (60,000)
Air Canada's European Partners: Lufthansa, Turkish Airlines, Swiss International Air Lines, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, TAP Air Portugal, LOT Polish Airlines, SAS Scandinavian Airlines
Destination Tips: From Toronto, reach the UK, France, Spain, Germany, Netherlands, or Scandinavia within the 4,000-mile limit. From Montreal, expand into Switzerland or Italy.
In Conclusion: Europe and Asia for Your Buck
When it comes to maximizing your Aeroplan points, international flights to Europe or Asia often offer better returns than domestic North American routes. Getting a comfy business class seat on a long-haul flight can be a reality with the right points strategy. If you're dreaming of a far-off destination, start racking up those Aeroplan points and make your travel dreams come true!
Trudeau Government to Remove GST from Rental Projects 🏡
Following the end of the Liberal caucus meeting in London, ON on Sept 14, Prime Minister Trudeau announced that the federal government will be getting rid of the GST on any new rental building projects.
Most of you like me are not builders, and are perhaps wondering - why do I care?
Well, apparently, GST is a huge disincentive to build purpose-built rentals because although residential rents are exempt from sales taxes, the builders of those projects must still pay the full sales tax bill on the fair market value of the property before they sell it. This is in contrast with going the strata condominium route where the builders do not have to pay the 5% GST at all, because it is paid by the individual homebuyers.
And when I say disincentive, it is a significant one because the GST is assessed on the “fair market value” properties. So let’s say a developer purchased the property for $1M back in the 1990s, invested $30M to build a purpose-built rental project and the land value today has appreciated to $20M. They now have to pay a pretty penny ( 5% of $50M FMV) or $2.5M. That is of course the $2.5M they would not have to pay if they built a condo.
Building houses is a business, and just like most businesses, they usually lean toward the more profitable route, which often means constructing condos. It's no surprise that when you picture flashy, fresh apartments, purpose-built rentals don't immediately come to mind. But these rentals could be part of the solution to the housing crunch, especially since they give renters a stable place without landlords suddenly selling or moving back in.
And although this has been a welcomed piece of news by many, this decision is way overdue. This move was first promised by Trudeau in the 2015 election but was quickly scrapped after other housing policies were deemed to yield “a better return on investment”...and we all know where that went.
Better late than never I guess!
