RBC ION and ION+ Visa Offers: Earn Up to 12,000 Avion Premium Points
RBC has reintroduced their limited-time increased welcome bonuses for their ION and ION+ Visa cards. The bonuses for these cards are 6,000 and 12,000 points respectively when you apply by November 4, 2024.
These cards provide elevated earning rates on daily expenses, making them valuable additions to your RBC Avion strategy (more on this below).
RBC ION+ Visa: Up to 12,000 Avion Premium Points
The RBC ION+ Visa now comes with a welcome bonus of 12,000 Avion Premium points upon approval. 🔑
Avion Premium points differ from Avion Elite points, which are earned with the suite of Avion credit cards.
Earning Rates and Benefits
3 Avion Premium points per dollar on eligible groceries, dining, food delivery, gas, public transit, electric vehicle charging, rideshares, streaming, digital gaming, and digital subscriptions.
1 Avion Premium point per dollar on all other eligible purchases.
The RBC ION+ Visa offers superior earning rates on daily essentials compared to the lower-tier RBC ION Visa.
It comes with a $4 monthly fee or $48 annually, plus the card includes basic insurance coverage such as mobile device insurance, purchase security, and an extended warranty. You’ll also enjoy a complimentary 3-month DashPass subscription with unlimited deliveries and $0 delivery fees on qualifying orders.
There is no minimum income requirement to apply, and the offer is valid until November 4, 2024. ⏰
RBC ION Visa: 6,000 Avion Premium Points
The RBC ION Visa is a no-fee entry-level product that offers 6,000 Avion Premium points upon approval, with no minimum spending requirement.
Earning Rates and Target Audience
1.5 Avion Premium points per dollar on eligible groceries, gas, rideshares, public transit, electric vehicle charging, streaming, digital gaming, and digital subscriptions.
1 Avion Premium point per dollar on all other eligible purchases.
Targeted at casual travelers, this card appeals to those who spend on rideshares, transit, streaming, and video games. You’ll also enjoy a complimentary 3-month DashPass subscription. There is no minimum income requirement, and the offer expires on November 4, 2024.
Understanding Avion Points: Select, Premium, and Elite
RBC offers three subtypes of Avion points: Avion Select, Avion Premium, and Avion Elite. Avion Elite is the highest tier, provides the most flexibility in redemption options. Here is a summary of the key points and a chart for easy reference:
Avion Elite: Highest tier, maximum redemption flexibility
Earned through specific RBC credit cards
Points can be transferred to airline loyalty programs, redeemed via the Air Travel Redemption Schedule, or cashed out for gift cards/statement credits
Transfer rate: 1:1 from Avion Premium to Avion Elite points
Avion Premium: Earned through RBC ION cards, better-earning rates despite low/no annual fees
Can only be transferred to WestJet Rewards or cashed out for statement credits/gift cards
Can not be used for other airline loyalty programs or the Air Travel Redemption Schedule
Conversion: Avion Premium points can be converted to Avion Elite points if you hold an Avion credit card

While Avion Premium points offer strong earning rates, particularly with RBC ION cards, their redemption options are limited compared to Avion Elite points. The optimal strategy is to convert Avion Premium points to Avion Elite points, for greater value and flexibility.
This can be done easily if you have an Avion credit card, making it worthwhile to save your Avion Premium points and plan to acquire an Avion card for future conversions and redemptions.
Redemption Options
Avion Premium points can be transferred to WestJet Rewards at a 100:1 ratio. However, they cannot be used with three of the four airline partners in the Avion Rewards program, nor can they be redeemed via the Air Travel Redemption Schedule..sadly. Instead, Avion Premium points are redeemable at a rate of 0.58 cents per point for travel booked via Avion Rewards.
Point Conversion
If you hold an RBC Avion card, such as the RBC Avion Visa Infinite or RBC Avion Visa Platinum, you can convert Avion Premium points into Avion Elite points at a 1:1 ratio. This allows you to access higher-value travel redemptions exclusive to Avion cardholders.
Optimizing Your RBC Credit Card Portfolio
Combining an RBC ION+ Visa with a higher-tier Avion card maximizes your earning potential. The RBC ION+ Visa offers elevated earning rates on everyday essentials, and these points can be converted to Avion Elite points for more valuable redemptions. This can significantly boost your earning rates on common daily purchases compared to the Avion Elite cards alone.
