Changes Coming to British Airwaysâ Loyalty Program in 2025 âď¸
Heads up, British Airways fans! Major changes are landing in the airlineâs loyalty program starting April 1, 2025. The British Airways Executive Club is getting a facelift and a name changeâitâll now be called The British Airways Club. Along with the rebrand, new rules for earning Tier Points are coming, and they might just shake up how you approach elite status. Letâs break it down! đŤ
đˇ How It Worked Before
Under the current Executive Club, Tier Points are based on distance flown and fare class. A long-haul flight in business or first class could net you a ton of points, making it easier to climb the status ladder. Partner flights were also a great way to earn Tier Points, with many savvy travelers using airlines like Qatar Airways or American Airlines to boost their status while keeping costs manageable.
Elite status thresholds were much lower:
⢠Bronze: 300 Tier Points
⢠Silver: 600 Tier Points
⢠Gold: 1,500 Tier Points
For years, this system rewarded travelers who planned strategically. But thatâs all changing. đ
đˇ How Youâll Earn Tier Points Now
British Airways is switching things up with a spend-based system. Starting April 1, 2025, youâll earn 1 Tier Point per ÂŁ1 spent on:
⢠Base fares
⢠BA-imposed surcharges
⢠Extras like seat selection and baggage fees
⢠BA Holidays packages (earn Tier Points on the full package cost!)
If you love flying with partner airlines, Tier Points will still be distance-based, but the amount earned will depend on your fare class percentage. For instance, the cheapest tickets may earn as little as 2% of the distance flown. đ˘
đŻ New Tier Status Requirements
The thresholds for achieving elite status are going up:
⢠Bronze: 3,500 Tier Points (up from 300)
⢠Silver: 7,500 Tier Points (up from 600)
⢠Gold: 20,000 Tier Points (up from 1,500)
⢠Gold Guest List: 65,000 Tier Points (with 80% from BA flights/packages)
Earning elite status will take more effortâand more spending.
đ Perks and New Earning Opportunities
Not all the changes are bad news! British Airways is introducing more ways to earn Tier Points:
⢠Contributions to Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) will earn 1 Tier Point and 10 Avios per ÂŁ1 spent đą
⢠Spending on BA Holidays packages will earn Tier Points at a ratio of 1 Tier Point per £10 spent, split among travelers in the booking
Plus, new milestone rewards include bonus Avios (e.g., gifts of 2,500, 4,000, and 5,000 Avios) to make the journey to elite status a little sweeter.
đ˘ Who Does This Affect?
Frequent fliers chasing elite statusâespecially Canadians aiming for Gold or higherâwill feel the pinch. If youâve been relying on partner flights or cheap fares to climb the ranks, the new spend-based system could mean more out-of-pocket costs.
But if youâre a casual traveller focused on redeeming Avios for free flights, these changes might not matter much. Youâll still rack up Avios just as you always have.
â Why Should You Care?
Value Shift: The focus is now on spending, not distance. If youâre used to hacking status with long flights, itâs time to rethink your strategy.
New Opportunities: BA Holidays packages and SAF contributions are now rewardingâyou can earn while traveling and doing good for the planet. đ
Bigger Commitment: Achieving elite perks like lounge access or bonus Avios will require more spending or more frequent flying.
đĄ Many Are Not Happy
The switch to a revenue-based system has hardcore BA sounding off on Reddit. Gone are the days of racking up Tier Points by flying long-haul on a budget. Now, itâs all about spending big đ¸, and some travellers are side-eyeing BA like, âWho asked for this?â
For savvy jet-setters who played the points game like pros, these changes feel like an expensive buzzkill.
Curious about the drama? Check out the BA Reddit page for more angry travellers, where their going and more.
Final Thoughts
The new British Airways Club is shaking up the loyalty landscape. While it offers more flexibility in earning Tier Points, the steeper thresholds could make it harder to achieve elite status but maybe thatâs the goal with this new change.
If youâre loyal to British Airways, this is your chance to rethink your travel strategy. Booking BA Holidays or contributing to SAF could be key to maximizing your rewards.

đŻ Why This Card Stands Out
The Scotiabank Platinum American Express Card is a powerhouse for anyone who spends big or frequently travels. Itâs packed with perks, including:
No Foreign Transaction Fees: Save 2.5% on purchases made in other currencies, whether abroad or online.
10 Airport Lounge Visits: Relax in style with complimentary Priority Pass access to over 1,300 lounges worldwide.
2x Points on Every Dollar: Earn double Scene+ points on all eligible purchases, with no spending caps.
This card is often overlooked, but it punches well above its weight, making it a serious contender for premium rewards seekers (travel booking excluded đ).
đż How to Redeem Scene+ Points
Scene+ points are incredibly versatile, letting you redeem for:
Travel: Book through Scene+ Travel or apply points to travel purchases made anywhere.
Groceries: Redeem points at the till at Sobeys, FreshCo, IGA, and more.
Dining: Use points at restaurants.
Movies: Trade points for Cineplex tickets or snacks.
Gift Cards: Redeem for popular retailers and brands.
For travel redemptions, you get $1 for every 100 points, and the best part is you donât need to have the full amount. If your flight costs $500 and you have 40,000 points, you can use them for a $400 discount and pay the rest. Flexibility is the name of the game here.
Note: The Scene+ program isnât exactly winning medals in the travel rewards booking space, but hey, if this card vibes with you and gets you what you need, who are we to judge?
âď¸ Perks That Pay for Themselves
This cardâs benefits more than cover its $399 annual fee. Between the no FX fees, which save you money on international purchases, and the lounge passes worth up to $400 annually, youâre already ahead.
Plus, with the insurance packageâcovering everything from medical emergencies to trip cancellationsâyouâll be traveling with peace of mind.
đ Is This Card for You?
This card is perfect for anyone who wants big rewards without complicated spending categories. If you love earning Scene+ points for flexible redemptionsâwhether for travel, groceries, or nights outâthis card delivers.
Itâs also a no-brainer for travellers who want to avoid foreign transaction fees while earning rewards on every purchase. This is possibly itâs best feature.
