💸 Amex Cobalt Is Getting More Expensive, But Still Pays Off

As of November 5, 2025, our country’s beloved Amex Cobalt card is bumping its monthly fee from $12.99 to $15.99 ($150 to $191.88 annually in Quebec). That’s about a 23% jump, or in layman’s terms, two Venti Starbucks coffees. Still, this shouldn’t be a dealbreaker if you already have the card, or a reason to avoid it if you’ve been thinking of getting one.

The good news? Nothing else about this card is changing. 😎 The earn rates, airline transfer partners, and benefits all stay the same. This means the Cobalt still earns like few other cards in Canada, especially if you spend a lot on groceries and dining out.

🌟 Why This Card is Still a Heavy Hitter

The Cobalt’s earn rates haven’t changed, and that’s what keeps it at the top of our list. You can earn:

  • 5x the points on food and drinks (groceries, restaurants, and bars)

  • 3x the points on streaming subscriptions (think Netflix, Disney Plus, and Spotify)

  • 2x the points on gas and transit

  • 1x the points on everything else (including payments with Chexy)

The insurance perks are solid, too: you get mobile device coverage, plus travel insurance for medical, trip delays, and lost or stolen baggage.

So yes, the fee is higher. But if you’re spending big in the card’s high-earning categories, the rewards can still more than make up for it.

📈 Using the Cobalt with Chexy to Maximize Value

Let’s say you spend $500 on food and dining out per month, plus use Chexy to pay $3,000/month in rent, tuition, or other big expenses that normally wouldn’t earn rewards. Here’s what that points earning structure looks like:

Dining Out:

  • $500 x 12 = $6,000

  • Earn rate = 5x points per dollar → 30,000 points/year

Chexy Payments:

  • $3,000 × 12 = $36,000 in payments

  • Fee = $630

  • Total charged = $36,630

  • Earn rate = 1x point per dollar → 36,630 points/year

Welcome Bonus: 15,000 points

Add it all up, and you’ll have 81,630 points in your first year, just for putting everyday purchases on your Cobalt card.

Transfer those points to Aeroplan, and you’re looking at free flights to Munich, Miami, London, or plenty of other European destinations. ✈️

💡 Final Thoughts

Yes, the Amex Cobalt is getting pricier. But unless you barely use it, the extra $3/month is unlikely to erase the insane value this card can generate, especially when paired with Chexy for large, otherwise non-rewardable payments.

For most people who spend on food, travel occasionally, and use Chexy for large payments, the Cobalt is still one of the best overall travel rewards cards in Canada.

✈️ Get Up to 60% More When Buying Qatar Airways Avios

Qatar Airways is currently running a tempting offer: until August 25th, 2025, you can buy Avios with up to a 60% bonus, dropping the price to about 1.5¢ USD (2¢ CAD) per point.

Why does this matter? Those points can unlock Qatar’s legendary Qsuites (private suites, lie-flat beds, and dine-on-demand) for a fraction of cash fares. Think $1,000 in points for a ticket that usually sells for $5,000+.

The question is… should you hop on this deal? We break down whether it’s worth buying points now or waiting for a better value.

💳 New American Express Aeroplan Welcome Bonus Offers

Amex just changed the welcome bonus offers on its premium Aeroplan Reserve cards, and they’re big. The Aeroplan Reserve (personal) now comes with up to 85,000 points, while the Business Reserve goes as high as 95,000 points

The catch? You’ll need to hit steep spend thresholds ($7,500+ in the first 3 months, and smaller spend again in month 13).

So, are these new offers actually worth it for frequent flyers? Let’s break down what you really get for that $599 annual fee.

🌟 Small Business Spotlight: How TiffinStash is Reshaping Indian Meal Delivery

We sat down with Krish Shah, founder of TiffinStash, to hear how he turned a personal struggle into a business serving hundreds of home-style Indian meals across the GTA. What started as a search for reliable tiffin services became a platform connecting newcomers, students, and professionals with the flavors of home.

Running such an operation is no small feat, but with tools like Chexy, Krish has found smart ways to keep operations lean while turning everyday expenses into rewards.

Want to know how he built it and what role Chexy plays in keeping it running?

Unlocking Qatar Airways Avios

When it comes to premium travel, few experiences stand out quite like Qatar Airways Qsuites — often ranked among the world’s best.

Passengers enjoy private suites with closing doors, lie-flat beds, dine-on-demand service, and now even Starlink high-speed Wi-Fi on select aircraft.

For many travellers, it’s as close to First Class as you’ll get in business.

Thanks to Qatar Airways Privilege Club adopting Avios as its currency, it’s relatively straightforward for Canadians to book this experience with points.

Avios can be freely moved between British Airways and Qatar Airways, and for Canadians, the most accessible path is to earn Amex Membership Rewards or RBC Avion points, transfer them to The British Airways Club Avios, and then move them across to Qatar Airways Avios.

Award pricing with Qatar is based on zones, and it uses peak and off-peak calendars.

For example, a one-way business class ticket from Montreal to Doha costs 70,000 Avios off-peak (or 94,500 during peak) plus taxes and fees.

Flexi awards are also available, opening up more seats at roughly double the standard price.

Other sweet spots include:

  • Doha to Maldives: 43,000 Avios in business class

  • Doha to Bangkok: 50,000 Avios in business class

  • Doha to London: 64,500 Avios in First Class (including access to the Al Safwa Lounge)

With Avios pooling across programs and frequent transfer bonuses from banks, building up enough for a Qsuites redemption has never been easier.

For Canadians looking beyond Aeroplan, Qatar Avios is one of the most powerful ways to unlock premium travel to the Middle East, Asia, and Africa.
