First on our radar is their promotion, where you have the opportunity to acquire points at a discounted rate. As always, I strongly advise exercising caution when purchasing points. It's crucial to crunch the numbers and ensure that your point purchase aligns with your travel objectives and offers genuine value.

⭐ Here's the golden rule: Never purchase points on impulse. Instead, pinpoint the specific flight you intend to book and compare the cost of buying and redeeming points against the cash price of the ticket. This method will give you a clear understanding of whether you're getting a favorable deal.

For those contemplating this promotion, here's the sweet spot: When you purchase more than 24,000 points, you'll receive a 100% bonus. So, if you're thinking about a points purchase, consider acquiring 24,000 points. You will secure an additional 24,000 points, for $732 USD or roughly $1,014 Canadian Dollars.

Changes to Redemption Rates

But that's not all. Air France KLM has also revamped its redemption rates, and the results are a bit of a mixed bag.

In the past, the number of points required for a flight was determined by its distance. For example, a trip from Montreal to Paris required fewer points than one from Vancouver to Paris, given the longer travel distance. However, Flying Blue has now introduced a flat rate for redemptions from North America to Europe. 🇪🇺

So, what does this mean for you? 

Well, if you're departing from Vancouver, Calgary, or Edmonton, you're in for a pleasant surprise! Your redemption rate has effectively decreased. However, for our friends in Toronto, Montreal, and Ottawa, the rate has gone up.😭

Breaking Down The Numbers: Vancouver to Athens 🏛️🛫

To put this into perspective, let's look at a real-world example. After conducting a quick search, we found availability for a business class seat from Vancouver to Athens, with a layover in Paris, on Air France (Known for its business class offerings).

To book this flight using points, you'd require 50,000 Flying Blue points. Purchasing these points would set you back $793 USD (or $1,093 CAD), leaving you with an extra 2,000 points. However, it's worth noting that Flying Blue imposes higher fees for business class bookings, adding an additional $338.91 CAD to your bill. 

In total, you'd be spending approximately $1,437.80 CAD for a one-way business class ticket. 🎫

But is it worth it? 

Let's make a comparison. The most affordable one-way business class ticket for the same route comes in at a hefty $3,655. While the points redemption offers substantial savings, it's important to mention that round-trip business class fares on Air France to Athens typically hover around $2,900 CAD. 💰

So, while the points deal appears appealing for one-way travelers, those seeking round-trip options may find competitive cash prices.
