💳 Koho vs. Wealthsimple—Which Credit Card Wins for Canadians (and Renters)?

Fintech cards are dropping left and right, each one “promising” to be the best thing since contactless payments. Two big players on the scene right now are the Koho Metal Mastercard and the Wealthsimple Credit Card. One wants to buy you in with the premium aesthetic and flashy design; the other keeps things simple while delivering solid cashback and credit-building perks. But which one makes sense for Canadians—especially our Chexy users?
Let’s compare their features, see what it takes to qualify, and do the math on which card actually delivers value.
Koho Metal Mastercard (Coming soon). 💳
The Koho Metal Mastercard, which is currently in its waitlist stage is all about giving you that premium experience with a lack of premium perks. It’s a metal prepaid card that feels sleek and modern, mimicking the look of the American Express Platinum card without the $799 price point or value, for that matter.
Lets take a quick look at if the shine holds up when you look at the details.
Requirements 📋
To get the Koho Metal Mastercard, you need to:
Sign up for the yearly Everything Plan at $177 per year. If you’re not on that plan, you can still get the card by paying a one-time fee of $150.
Since it’s a prepaid card, there’s no credit check and no need for a high income or perfect credit score.
Must be a Canadian resident and age of majority (18) to apply.
While this makes the card incredibly accessible, it creates a bit of a paradox. You wouldn’t expect a metal card—typically associated with exclusivity and premium status—to have virtually no barriers to entry. This ease of access contradicts the “premium” image the card and the brand wants to project.
The sleek design and premium feel are there, but the path to getting the card feels almost too easy for what it’s trying to represent, especially when looking at more details, like the earn rates and perks.
Earn rates
Categories | Cashback Rate |
Groceries/Transport/Dining | 2% |
Everything Else | 0.5% |
Plus:
Interest Earnings: Earn up to 5% interest on your balance.
Fee Structure: No foreign transaction fees.
Extras: You get 3 GB of eSIM data per month, one free international ATM withdrawal, and 50% off Koho’s Credit Building services
The Math: Is It Worth it? 🧮
To justify the $177 annual fee, you need to spend enough in the 2% categories. Here’s the breakdown:
Catergory | Cashback rate | Annual Spending to Cover $177 Fee | Monthly Spending Equivalent |
Groceries/Transport/Dining | 2% | $8,850 | $738/month |
Everything Else | 0.5% | $35,400 | $2,950/month |
To get real value from the Koho Metal Mastercard, you need to be strategic about your spending. The card’s annual fee is $177 through the Everything Plan, or you can pay a one-time fee of $150. To break even on that $177 fee, you need to consistently spend about $738 a month in the categories where the card offers 2% cashback—specifically groceries, dining, and transportation. If your monthly spending in these categories is lower, the fee becomes harder to justify. 🤑
Spending outside these categories only earns 0.5% cashback, which means you’d have to spend significantly more to cover the fee. If your spending habits are varied or unpredictable, the Koho Metal Card’s fee can quickly outweigh its benefits.
Additionally, because the Koho Metal Card is a prepaid card, it doesn’t help you build credit. While you get some cashback and perks, your payments won’t contribute to improving your credit score. If building or maintaining good credit is a priority, this card won’t support that goal.
Wealthsimple Visa Credit Card (Coming soon).
The Wealthsimple Visa Credit Card takes a different approach. It’s a credit card with straightforward rewards and no fees if you meet the requirements.
You get 2% unlimited cashback on all purchases, no categories to track. The math here is simple, so we won’t break it down but this is a solid card for everyday spending if you are already a Wealthsimple customer.
Plus, there are no foreign exchange fees, and since it’s a credit card, every payment helps boost your credit score, unlike Koho’s Metal Card. Your cashback lands instantly in your Wealthsimple account, where you can spend or invest it.
Requirements
The card has no monthly fee if you deposit $2,000 a month into your Wealthsimple Cash account. You will however need to pass a credit check to qualify.
Which Card Reigns Supreme?
The Wealthsimple Credit Card is the clear winner if you want cashback, no fees (assuming you meet the deposit requirement), and a way to build credit. It’s simple, rewarding, and makes financial sense for most Canadians. Plus, you can use this card with Chexy and get 0.25% on every rent payment after the fee.
