āœˆļø Get a 50% Bonus When Buying WestJet Points: But Should You?

WestJet is back with another 50% bonus points sale, running until October 3, 2025. On paper, it might look like a good deal: buy 2,500+ points and you’ll pay 1.33 cents per point instead of the regular 2 cents. The catch? WestJet points are fixed at a value of 1 cent each, meaning you’re paying more than they’re worth.

šŸ“‰ Why It’s a Bad Deal

Unlike Aeroplan or Avios, where you can hunt for good redemptions to unlock outsized value, WestJet Rewards runs on a flat model: 100 points = $1 toward flights.

Occasionally, Member Exclusive Fares offer a small discount (usually single digits, but rarely more).

In this case, buying points at 1.33 cents that max out at 1 cent in value means you’re starting at a loss. Even in best-case scenarios like cheaper Member Exclusive fares, you might break even at best (and even then, you won’t earn points on the booking).

Let’s take a look at a flight from Toronto to Vancouver, costing $145.16 in cash (before taxes).

You’d need 14,516 points to cover this flight. Buying those points in the 50% sale costs about $193 (or $218 with HST), meaning you’d spend more than the cash fare and lose out on earning points. It’s just not worth it. āŒ

If you want WestJet perks, the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard is a much better option. The sign-up bonus alone gets you 45,000 points plus an annual companion voucher, lounge access, free first checked bags, and more, all for $119 a year. Now this is real value. āœ…

šŸ’” The Bottom Line

Buying WestJet points, even at a 50% bonus, isn’t worth it. You’ll almost always save money by paying cash for flights and earning points in the process. Unless WestJet completely revamps its rewards program (which it already did earlier this year), these buy-point promos are never a great deal. Check It Out

šŸŽ‰ Emirates Turns 25 with a 50% Miles Bonus

Emirates is celebrating Skywards’ 25th birthday by handing out 50% bonus miles on every flight booked by October 20th, 2025 (for travel until November 30th, 2025). The deal applies to all fare types and cabins, including flights from Montreal and Toronto.

You can also earn up to a 50% bonus when you buy or gift Miles, until October 20, 2025.

Is This a Good Deal?

Unlike WestJet’s fixed-value points, Emirates Skywards can deliver outsized value if you redeem smartly. Think premium cabin redemptions or partner flights that normally cost thousands of dollars.

Getting 50% more Miles on paid flights is like a free upgrade to your earning rate. For example, a Toronto–Dubai business-class flight that normally earns ~15,000 Miles would now net you ~22,500. That’s a solid amount of points toward a future long-haul redemption.

šŸŽ‚ The Extra Birthday Perks

More perks include:

  • 25% bonus miles with partners (shopping, hotels, Air Canada, etc.)

  • A contest with prizes up to 1 million Skywards miles (just register and earn to be entered)

How To Earn More Miles

There are no co-branded Emirates credit cards in Canada, so earning Miles requires flying or converting from other programs. Your main options are:

  • Flying Emirates or flydubai (the higher the fare and cabin class, the more Skywards miles you earn, sometimes up to 3Ɨ the base rate)

  • Flying partner airlines and crediting eligible flights (e.g., with Air Canada) to your Skywards account

  • Converting Marriott Bonvoy points at a rate of 3:1, which isn’t a great rate, so it’s best used only to top up your account when you’re close to the miles needed for a flight

šŸ¤‘ Where Can These Miles Take You?

Redemption rates can vary widely based on distance, season, and cabin. Some examples of good redemptions:

  • Toronto to Dubai (business class): ~138,000 miles one way (~$5,000+ cash fare), meaning a potential value of about 2.76 cents per mile

  • Montreal to Dubai (economy class): ~50,000 miles one way (~$1,000+ cash fare), delivering a value of 1.46 cents per mile

The Bottom Line

Earning Skywards Miles still requires spending big on Emirates fares, and they aren’t as easy to maximize as programs like Aeroplan or Avios. Economy redemptions often don’t stretch far, and taxes + fees on Emirates flights can be steep.

This promo is most valuable for business and first-class travellers who can use bonus miles to offset a five-figure fare. If you’re already planning to fly Emirates, consider it free upside. But unless long-haul premium travel is already on your radar, this bonus alone isn’t enough to justify booking a Dubai trip.
