✈️ Aeroplan Points with a 30% Discount

If you’re sitting on an almost-there Aeroplan balance or eyeing a big redemption, this could be your chance to top up without paying full price.

Right now, Aeroplan is running a promo where you can buy points for up to 30% off—but it ends on May 14, 2025 at 11:59 PM PT, so don’t wait too long!

What’s the deal? 🤑

Depending on how many points you buy, here’s the discount:

  • 10,000–19,000 points → 15% off

  • 20,000–75,000 points → 20% off

  • 80,000–95,000 points → 25% off

  • 100,000+ points → 30% off

With the full 30% off, you’re paying 2.45 cents per point (CAD)—better than the regular 3.5 cents, but still above what most people value them at (around 2.1 cents per point).

Is it worth it? 💸

It depends. If you’re just short of a redemption, or planning a business class flight with a partner airline like Lufthansa or ANA, it could make sense. Those flights have fixed pricing, so you can squeeze out more value.

But for Air Canada flights, points pricing is dynamic, so it can fluctuate based on demand. In that case, buying points can be riskier unless you’re booking right away.

What card should you use? 💳

Aeroplan purchases go through Points.com, not Air Canada, so you won’t earn bonus points for travel. Plus, if you’re using a Canadian credit card, you’ll get hit with sales tax, which adds up depending on your province. Consider a no FX.

Family Sharing = Power Move 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

You can link up to eight Aeroplan accounts with Family Sharing and pool your points. That means you could technically buy up to 8 million points per year across a household.

Great for families, or just you and your travel buddy stacking points together.

Final thoughts ✈️

Buying Aeroplan points at a discount can be a smart move, if you know exactly how you’ll use them. It’s great for topping up before a big redemption, or when you’ve found a flight that gives you more value than you’re paying.

But if you’re just stacking points for “someday,” you might be better off earning through credit cards or promos.

Once you’ve earned enough points to make a redemption, one of the biggest hurdles people come across is efficiently finding award availability.

Sure, you can spend hours manually searching for award flights date-by-date, but there are much more streamlined ways to get what you want.

If you have access to an award search tool (our favourites are Seats.Aero and Roame), you can search multiple programs across multiple dates. Plus, if you can’t find the flight you want, you can set alerts to be notified if it becomes available.

Alternatively, you can take advantage of calendar search functions available on select loyalty program websites to search a month at a time.

If you’re searching for Star Alliance awards, use the calendar search on United MileagePlus

If you’re searching for oneworld awards, use the calendar search on American Airlines AAdvantage.

If you’re searching for SkyTeam awards, try the “secret” calendar search on the Air France KLM Flying Blue website.

All of these sites are free to use, and you can narrow down your search with the following tips:

  • Use filters to search for non-stop flights (this gets rid of unwanted connecting flights)

  • Set your desired class of service to filter out other cabin classes

  • Get to know which prices to look for so you can easily spot “Saver”-level award availability

Once you’ve found the flight you want, simply confirm its availability through the loyalty program of your choice, transfer points into your account (as needed), and then lock it in before someone else does!
