✈️ How to Maximize Rewards with MR Points and Aeroplan Transfers
One of the smartest ways to unlock travel experiences is by transferring your American Express Membership Rewards (MR) points to Aeroplan at a 1:1 ratio.
Here’s how to do it:
Log in to your Amex account
Navigate to the Membership Rewards section.
Select “Transfer Points.”
Link your Aeroplan account if you haven’t already, then choose how many points to transfer in increments of 1,000.
Once the points are in your Aeroplan account (usually instantly), you can redeem them for flights on Air Canada or any of its Star Alliance partners. This means access to over 1,300 destinations worldwide.
For instance, just 60,000 Aeroplan points can secure you a one-way business-class ticket to Europe—a flight that could cost more than $3,000 in cash.
✈️ Aeroplan Elite Status: What It Is and How You Can Earn It
If you love traveling or have ever heard of Air Canada’s Aeroplan rewards program, you’ve probably come across the term Aeroplan Elite Status. But what is it exactly? Why do so many people want it (including Chexy staff)? And most importantly, how can you get it?
Let’s break it down in simple terms so you can start planning your next big adventure.
🤔 What is Aeroplan Elite Status?
Aeroplan Elite Status is essentially an exclusive club for travellers who use Air Canada and its partners regularly. Think of this as leveling up in a game or reaching goals in a competition: the more you fly and spend, the more perks you unlock.
These perks make travel easier and more enjoyable, like skipping long lines at check-in and security, getting free checked bags, enjoying airport lounges with comfy seating, snacks, and drinks, and upgrading to better seats on flights.
It’s available in five levels: 25k, 35k, 50k, 75k, and Super Elite. The higher you climb, the better the perks. Each tier builds on the previous one, so even starting at 25k can add a little sparkle to your travel routine. The best part? You can earn your way to Elite Status not just by flying frequently but also by spending smartly—yes, even your grocery shopping and rent payments can help!
Here’s a breakdown of the tiers:
So, How Do You Earn Aeroplan Elite Status?
You can earn Elite Status in two main ways:
Fly Frequently with Air Canada or Partners
Every time you book and fly, you earn qualifying miles (how far you fly), segments (how many flights you take), and dollars (how much you spend). Here’s what these mean:
SQM (Status Qualifying Miles): The distance you fly. For example, a flight from Toronto to Vancouver is about 2,000 miles, so you earn 2,000 SQM.
SQS (Status Qualifying Segments): The number of flights you take. One takeoff and landing equals one segment.
SQD (Status Qualifying Dollars): How much you spend on your ticket’s base fare. Spend $500, and you earn 500 SQD. To reach 25k Status, you need 25,000 SQM, 25 SQS, or $3,000 SQD in a year.
The higher levels require more miles, flights, or dollars, but the perks also increase significantly.
Use Everyday Spending
Don’t fly often? Aeroplan lets you earn status through Everyday Status Qualification (EDQ). This means you can work toward Elite Status by spending money on things like groceries, dining, or even rent using an Aeroplan-linked credit card or partners like LCBO and Starbucks.
For example, every 1,000 Aeroplan points you earn counts toward EDQ. If you use an Aeroplan credit card that gives bonus points on groceries or even rent, you can rack up points—and status—without boarding a plane.
💳 How Credit Cards Can Help You Earn Status Faster
If you’re not flying every week, credit cards are your best friend for earning Elite Status. By using an Aeroplan credit card, you earn points on every dollar you spend—on groceries, dining, travel, and even rent.
For example, American Express Aeroplan Reserve Card offers up to 3 points per dollar on Air Canada purchases and 1.25 points on everything else. If you pay your rent through Chexy, which allows you to earn points on rent, you could accelerate your journey to Elite Status without stepping on a plane.
💼 Is Aeroplan Elite Status Worth It?
Yes, if you travel often. If you fly regularly, the perks are a no-brainer. Lounge access, priority lines, free bags, and upgrades save you time and money while making travel much more enjoyable. Plus, if you’re travelling internationally, the value of lounge access alone can make it worth it.
Maybe not, if you travel infrequently. If you only fly once or twice a year, it might not be worth the effort to earn or maintain Elite Status. However, even hitting 25k Status can improve your experience with perks like waived fees and free seat upgrades.
🔑 Quick Tips to Reach Elite Status
Use an Aeroplan Credit Card: Cards like the Amex Aeroplan Reserve or CIBC Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege let you earn points on everyday purchases and come with perks like free checked bags and priority boarding.
Shop with Aeroplan Partners: Earn bonus points at LCBO, Starbucks, and Uber Eats.
Pay Big Bills Through Chexy: Maximize your rent and bill payments by earning points on one of your biggest expenses.
Fly Smart: Book flights directly with Air Canada or Star Alliance partners to maximize qualifying miles and dollars.
