💳 Amex’s Add-a-Card Bonus Promo

For a limited time, American Express is running an Add a Card promo for Canadian cardholders, and this applies to both personal and business cards. The idea’s simple: add supplementary cardholders, and when they meet the minimum spend, you get rewarded with bonus points.

This promo runs until October 30, 2025. Here’s the inside scoop 👇

🌟 How it Works

Add up to two supplementary cardholders on eligible personal cards (three supplementary users on business cards) and earn bonus points when they spend.

  • The exact number of points depends on the card, but most bonuses are worth between 10,000 and 60,000 points, if you truly maximize this offer.

  • Some supplementary cards are free to add, but others come with hefty annual fees, so it’s worth weighing the math before adding another user.

Here’s what this bonus looks like for a few top cards:

  • Amex Cobalt: earn up to 20,000 Membership Rewards points with no extra fee

  • Platinum Card: earn up to 60,000 points, but adding two supplementary cards will cost you $500 in fees

  • Business Platinum: earn up to 105,000 points, but again, fees apply

🤔 Is it Worth it?

If you’re adding free supplementary cards (i.e. the Cobalt, Gold, Bonvoy, Green), the answer is usually yes: you’re earning more points without paying anything extra.

However, if you’re paying hundreds in annual fees just for this bonus, you need to compare the effective cost per point. For example, paying $500 to earn 60,000 MR points is like buying points at 0.83¢ each, which is pretty solid, but only if you’ll use them well.

💡 Pro tip: Amex points are valued at around 2.2 cents each. Compare this to the cost of adding another card vs the points you’ll earn.

How to Get the Most Out of Your Points

Amex MR points transfer to Aeroplan at 1:1, and Aeroplan’s partner airlines are where you squeeze the most juice out of your points:

  • A one-way business class ticket to Europe can cost about 60 to 80k Aeroplan points. That’s within reach if you max out just one or two of these Add-a-Card bonuses.

  • A one-way business class ticket to Asia often runs ~ 85k points. Again, achievable if you’re stacking points strategically.

🤑 How to Earn Even More Points

Stacking promos is great, but the fastest way to supercharge your points is by using Chexy to pay your biggest expenses. By putting things like rent, tuition, or bills on your Amex card, you’re earning points on payments that normally wouldn’t earn you anything.

Here’s what that looks like in practice:

  • $3,000/month on rent + bills with the Amex Aeroplan Reserve and Chexy

  • That earns about 3,815 points per month

  • Over a year, that’s 45,787 points just from paying your biggest expenses

Now add in a welcome bonus plus this Add-a-Card promo, and you’re looking at well over 100,000 points in a year: enough for a round-trip to Europe in a lie-flat business class seat. 🫡

You’ve got until October 30, 2025, to take advantage of this offer.

✈️ Aeroplan’s Back With Another Points Sale (Up to 85% Bonus)

Air Canada is back with another points-buying promo, offering up to an 85% bonus when you buy Aeroplan points. This deal runs until September 24, 2025. We saw this exact same deal a few weeks ago, and like then, the offer isn’t the same for everyone. For example, I only got 80% this time, so check your own account before getting too excited.

At the very top tier, points work out to about 2.03¢ each, which is right around Aeroplan’s estimated value (~2.1¢). On paper, that makes this one of the “better” deals Aeroplan offers, but only if you redeem strategically.

  • Partner flights are where this makes sense. A business-class ticket that would normally run $6,000+ in cash might cost you about 70,000 points. Buying those points in this sale would come to ~$1,400 CAD plus fees, which is a solid deal.

  • Air Canada flights, on the other hand, are priced dynamically. When fares are low, points redemptions often aren’t worth it, and buying points to use here rarely beats just paying cash.

💡 Our take? Aeroplan seems to be running these sales more often (this is the second one in just two weeks) so there’s no real rush unless you have a trip in mind. Locking in points at 2.03¢ speculatively is risky, since you’re hoping you’ll get more value out of them later.

👉 This sale ends September 24, 2025, but if you miss it, odds are another will pop up soon.
