Air France KLM Flying Blue Miles with a 45% Discount

A plane's interior, with empty seats

Buying airline miles is often a tempting option, especially when you’re just shy of what you need for that dream vacation. Right now, Air France KLM Flying Blue is offering a tiered discount of up to 45% on purchased miles, making it an attractive offer for some travelers. But is it always a smart move? Let’s break down when it makes sense if you could benefit, and which destinations are worth considering. 😬

The Current Offer: Up to 45% Off Flying Blue Miles

From now until October 27, 2024, Air France KLM Flying Blue is offering a discount on purchased miles. The more miles you buy, the bigger the discount:

  • Buy 4,000 – 10,000 miles = 35% discount

  • Buy 12,000 – 22,000 miles = 40% discount

  • Buy 24,000+ miles = 45% discount

This isn’t as strong as past offers, which have if you look back at our previous newsletters, sometimes featured a 50% or even 100% bonus, but it can still be a good option for specific travelers. 🧳

When Does It Make Sense to Buy Miles?

With better offers likely to appear in the future, you might wonder: Should I jump on this deal or wait? Here are some situations where it could make sense to take advantage of the discount:

  1. 🔝Topping Up Your Account: If you’re close to having enough miles for redemption and just need a small boost, this could be the perfect opportunity to top off your account. This way, you can lock in that flight before it disappears.

  2. 🤑 Finding High-Value Redemptions: The key to making the most of this offer or any offer really is finding flights that give you great value per mile. With the 45% discount, each mile will cost you about 1.68 US cents or 2.35 Canadian cents. That means you should aim for redemptions where you’re getting at least 2.7 cents per mile to break even. If you find flights where you’re getting 3 or 4 cents per mile (which is possible), then buying miles could offer significant savings.

  3. 👀 Immediate Travel Plans: If you already have travel plans in place and know you’ll need the miles soon, this discount can be useful.

How You Can Maximize Flying Blue Miles with the October Promo and 45% Discount

If you’re a Canadian traveler, Air France KLM’s October Promo Rewards paired with their up to 45% discount on miles purchased presents a unique opportunity to save on your next European adventure. Whether you’re flying out of Montreal, Toronto, or Vancouver, this deal can help you score a fantastic fare—especially if you need to top off your Flying Blue account. 🤞

Let’s break down exactly how you can combine these offers, including how much you can save.

Canadian Routes in the Flying Blue Promo Rewards for October

Here are some specific Canadian routes included in this month’s Flying Blue Promo Rewards:

  • Montreal to Paris: Starting from 15,000 miles one-way in economy.

  • Toronto to Amsterdam: Starting from 15,000 miles one-way in economy.

  • Vancouver to Paris: Starting from 20,000 miles one-way in economy.

These discounts offer a great opportunity to use miles for a reduction on transatlantic flights, with savings compared to cash fares, which can range from $600 on the off-season to over $2,000 for these routes (roundtrip).

Example: Toronto to Amsterdam

  • Promo Reward: 15,000 miles one-way (30,000 miles round-trip).

  • Cost in Cash: A round-trip flight from Toronto to Amsterdam typically costs between $900 and $2,000.

Let’s say for example you already have 20,000 miles and need an extra 10,000 more to book this round trip. Using the discount purchase 10,000 miles at a 35% discount:

  • Regular cost for 10,000 miles = $244.98 USD

  • Discounted price = $178.75 USD (approx. $245 CAD)

Adding the taxes/fees on the award ticket (~$300), your total cost comes to $545 CAD. Compared to paying the $920 for the flight above in cash, you’re saving at least $375 CAD. 💸

Additionally, if you have zero miles, you can buy the exact amount you need and compare it to the cash price of the flight. Just make sure you’re not paying more for the miles and fees than the cash fare for the flight at the time you plan to travel.🧭

Air Canada Aeroplan Points with a 30% Discount. Should You Consider It? 😬

Here I am, starting another journey with another flight.

Air Canada’s latest promotion offers up to a 30% discount on purchased Aeroplan points, and it’s available until November 18, 2024. If you’re considering topping up your Aeroplan account to book an upcoming flight, this deal might catch your eye. 👁️

The Current Offer: Up to 30% Discount on Aeroplan Points

Here’s how the discount is structured:

  • Buy 10,000 – 19,000 points: 15% discount

  • Buy 20,000 – 75,000 points: 20% discount

  • Buy 80,000 – 95,000 points: 25% discount

  • Buy 100,000+ points: 30% discount

Purchasing Aeroplan points with the 30% discount brings the cost per point to about 2.45 cents CAD. While this might sound like a good deal, it’s important to remember that Aeroplan points are typically valued at around 1.5 cents per point (2.1 cents for travel), which means you are buying points at a higher value, which isn’t good.

Does It Make Sense to Buy Aeroplan Points?

Buying points outright isn’t always a great idea if the cost per point is higher than what you can usually redeem them for. At 2.45 cents per point, you’re paying more than the average redemption value of 1.5 cents and the 2.1 cent redemption for travel, which means you wouldn’t be getting ideal value in many situations, as explained above.

However, there are certain times when buying points can actually save you money. For example, if you’re redeeming Aeroplan points for business class flights, you’ll get much more for each point or simply need extra points to get a flight.

Note: you’ll need to find a very good deal for this to make sense.

When Does It Make Sense to Buy Points

This offer is best for those who:

  • Need points immediately to top off their account for a specific redemption.

  • Found high-value redemptions, like long-haul business class or first-class flights.

Should You Wait for a Better Deal?

The current promotion offers a “decent” discount, it’s not the lowest we’ve seen. Previous Aeroplan point sales have offered points at less than 2 cents per point, which would be a better deal for most travelers. If you’re not in a rush and don’t have an immediate redemption in mind, it might be worth waiting for a future promotion with a better price.

Aeroplan partners make business class to Asia more achievable

Aeroplan makes finding great deals much simpler than many other Miles & Points programs thanks to its detailed Flight Reward Chart.

The chart sets out exactly how many points flights of varying lengths will cost when booked on one of Air Canada’s many partner airlines.

We offered three suggestions on how to use Aeroplan points to fly to Asia in business class in our last column, and we have two more options to share.

One of the absolute best experiences for flying from North America to Asia is Japan’s ANA.

The problem with ANA is finding available seats in business class, but if you do, you can get a world-class flight from Vancouver to Tokyo for just 55,000 Aeroplan points.

The points total is so low because Vancouver to Tokyo is less than 5,000 miles, so it is in the least expensive bracket for flying between the North America and Pacific zones in the Aeroplan flight chart.

Our last recommendation for getting to Asia in business class is Singapore Airlines.

Unfortunately, the airline doesn’t fly to Canada, but with a short positioning flight to New York or Seattle, you can get a business class trip to Singapore for 87,500 Aeroplan points.

Singapore is near the western limit of Aeroplan’s Pacific Zone, so it falls into the second most expensive points bracket, but it is still a great deal for a journey of that length.

It’s generally easier to find award flights if you are planning your trip well in advance.
For example, the search in the image above was conducted on Air Canada’s website on Oct. 17, with a flight date as far in the future as the system allowed: Oct. 6, 2025.
