30% Transfer Bonus American Express to Marriott Bonvoy

American Express is offering a 30% bonus when you transfer your Membership Rewards points to Marriott Bonvoy until October 31, 2024. This promo allows you to essentially get 1.56 Bonvoy points per Amex point, providing great value for those looking to redeem hotel stays. Here’s a breakdown of how to make the most of it.

How the Math Works 🧮

Before this promo, the standard transfer rate from American Express to Marriott Bonvoy was 1:1.2. So for 10,000 Amex points, you would have received 12,000 Marriott Bonvoy points. With the current 30% bonus, you now receive 15,600 points for the same 10,000 Amex points! That’s 3,600 more points to book rooms with.

Now, a night at a property like the JW Marriott Venice or The Ritz-Carlton, Montreal, typically costs around 50,000-80,000 points, but the promo allows you to meet that point requirement more easily and quickly.

A Real Life Example 👀

For example, a stay at Castillo Hotel Son Vida requires 60,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per night. Normally, you’d need to transfer 50,000 American Express Membership Rewards points, as the usual 1:1.2 transfer ratio gets you exactly 60,000 points. However, with the current 30% bonus, you now only need about 38,462 Amex points to reach the same 60,000 Bonvoy points.

Is It Worth It? 😬

This bonus is excellent if you have a trip planned and are looking for hotel stays. The extra 30% makes it easier to reach luxe properties that one can only dream of staying at. Log in today and transfer points!

Unlock the value of Aeroplan’s partner reward chart

Often, the best deal you will get with Aeroplan points isn’t on a flight with Air Canada.

Aeroplan has a flight reward chart, which sets out how many points you can expect to use based on four geographic zones.

Because Air Canada uses dynamic pricing, which means award flights vary in price based on supply and demand, the chart presents a range of points for flights on Air Canada. In reality, dynamic pricing sometimes drives the cost even higher than the range presented.

Fortunately, the chart also includes fixed values for flights on Air Canada’s partner airlines.

Let’s look at the example of a trip in business class from Vancouver to Seoul, South Korea on Sept. 2, 2025.

The rewards chart breaks down flights based on distance. Seoul, which is in Aeroplan’s Pacific Zone, is about 5,100 miles from Vancouver, which is in the North America Zone.

The chart shows a flight on Air Canada could range from 75,000 to 175,000 points (and we found them as high as nearly 470,000 points). If a partner airline were to have an available business-class seat on a direct flight, it would cost just 75,000.

When searching on Sept. 24, 2024 we couldn’t find a flight at 75,000, but we found something close.

A trip on Air India, with a lengthy connection in New Delhi, cost 87,500. That’s because the total distance traveled bumped the flight to a higher fixed rewards price.

Still, that 87,500 represents good value for a long-haul, business-class flight.

Lastly, since Sept. 2, 2025, is a long way off, there is a chance a direct flight will become available on a partner airline for 75,000 points, so it’s worth checking often.

Earn $200 a Month Without Moving a Finger: Your Cheat Sheet to Dividend Investing. 🤑

Shooting in my office

Have you ever dreamt of making money while you sleep? Well, you’re in the right place! Let’s be real: there are very few ways to achieve true passive income. Real estate? Not so passive. Running a laundromat or vending machines? They might seem hands-off, but they require more effort than you’d think. But when it comes to dividends, you’re looking at true passive investing at its finest. Welcome to the fascinating world of dividends, where your money doesn’t just sit around—it works tirelessly for you. Ready to dive in? Let’s get started! 😏

What Are Dividends?

Dividends are like little thank-you notes from companies to their shareholders. When you own shares in a company, you essentially own a piece of that company. As a reward for your investment, the company pays you a portion of its profits. These payments are called dividends and can be issued quarterly, semi-annually, or annually. 📬💰

How Do Dividends Work? 🤔

  1. Dividend-Paying Stocks: When you invest in individual stocks of companies like Coca-Cola or Johnson & Johnson, you receive a portion of their profits. For example, if you own 100 shares of Coca-Cola that pay a $1.95 annual dividend per share, you’ll earn approximately $200 a year from that investment.🥤💵

  2. Dividend ETFs (Exchange-Traded Funds): These are funds that pool money from many investors to buy a diversified portfolio of dividend-paying stocks. ETFs like VDY, CDZ, and XEI focus on Canadian dividend-paying companies, offering you a slice of the profits from multiple companies in one go. These are well-diversified investments and generally a good place to start for newcomers to dividend investing. 📈🇨🇦

Why Choose Dividend ETFs?

For new investors, diving into individual stocks can be risky and time-consuming. Here’s why dividend ETFs might be a better choice:

  1. Diversification: ETFs spread your investment across many companies, reducing the risk of losing money if one company underperforms.🌐

  2. Lower Risk: With a diversified portfolio, the impact of a single company’s poor performance is minimized. 📉

  3. Convenience: ETFs are managed by professionals, so you don’t have to worry about picking the right stocks.🧑‍💼

  4. Low Fee: ETFs can be purchased for either no fee or very minimal fee using Canadian brokerages like Wealthsimple and Questrade. ETFs also have much lower management fees compared to mutual funds with most averaging under 0.25% per year. 💸

How to Earn $200 a Month

To earn $200 a month from dividends, you’ll need to invest in a portfolio that yields around $2,400 annually. For simplicity. We will take an example of 3 popular Canadian Dividend ETFs

  1. VDY (Vanguard FTSE Canadian High Dividend Yield Index ETF): Focuses on high-yield Canadian companies. Current yield of 4.4%.

  2. CDZ (iShares S&P/TSX Canadian Dividend Aristocrats Index ETF): Invests in companies with a history of increasing dividends. Current yield of 3.8%.

  3. XEI (iShares S&P/TSX Composite High Dividend Index ETF): Targets high-dividend-paying companies in Canada. Current yield of 5%.

If an investor were to create an equal-weight portfolio with these 3 ETFs, the blended Dividend yield would average right around 4.4% per year. This means every $100 investment would yield about $4.40. So, to earn a $2,400 annual return, An investor would need to build a portfolio of CAD 55,000. Keep in mind that this does not take into account the growth in the value of your holdings, and your actual returns could be much higher. For example, VDY has grown at an average rate of 7%+ each year for the past 5 years. This means you could collect the dividends while watching your money grow. 🥳💸

Final thoughts

Dividend investing is a smart way to achieve financial freedom. By starting with dividend ETFs, you can enjoy the benefits of diversification and professional management, making it easier to reach your financial goals without the stress of picking individual stocks. So, what are you waiting for? Start investing today and watch your money grow while you chill.
